Facts About Piqua Shawnee Tribe

 

The original home for Shawnee people was in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. However, their residences were far-ranging because of their migratory characteristic. Presently, a majority of them live in Oklahoma. The Piqua Shawnee is among the nine indigenous tribes that are known in India. In the past, each Shawnee band was governed by its tribal council and chief. There were also warheads, and they were selected based on their military skill and bravery. However, all the war chiefs and tribal councils owed allegiance to the leading principal chief. The principal chief was a member of the ruling clan.

He was a powerful figure, although he required the support of the people to stay in power. In case he lost the support of the villagers, he could be replaced. The roles between men and women were distinguished. The Shawnee men were hunters, and in some instances, they went to war so that they protect their families and land. The Shawnee women, on the other hand, were farmers, cooks, and child caring. The principal chiefs were always men.

 

The Shawnees did not live in iron-roofed houses. They survived in small round dwellings which were known as wigwams. These houses were made from wooden frames. The frames are protected with woven mats and sheets which are held by ropes or strips of wood. Each village comprised of a big council house that was built from wood. The Shawnee women wore leggings and long skirts while men wore leggings and breechcloths. During the cold weather, both male and females wore ponchos. The warriors however trimmed their hair when there was a duty to handle. For transport on water, the Shawnee made canoes by hollowing out large trees. Dogs, on the other hand, were utilized as pack animals. The food these people ate mainly came from their farms. Game meat and fish was brought home by men. The hunters used weapons like spears, stones, bows, and arrows for their hunting. The fishermen used nets and spears. The Shawnee were known for pottery, beadwork and wood carving. The beads were traded as currency, but they were culturally significant. In the Shawnee culture, storytelling was very important, and it was meant to keep their culture alive.
